Summer & Wine

Here comes another sizzlin' hot summer for the Southwest. Some wines are more suited to hot weather more than others. As we choose lighter foods over heavy, your wine choice should follow suit.

It's time to chill some crisp sauvignon blancs or rieslings. White wines are lighter and perfect for summer foods and bbq's. Rosé or pink wines, especially semi-dry are also great for the warmer days ahead. They go with most foods and are a great alternative to the heavier red wines. Champagne is good anytime of the year, so don't forget the bubbly!

Then, of course, there are wine coolers and if you must have red wine, try a Sangria! Here are a couple of starter recipes that you can experiment with. The trick is to Chill and add fruit to make them summery!

Wine Cooler Starter Recipe - per glass
4 oz  white wine
6 oz  soda - stick to the lemon/lime sodas
1/2 oz grapefruit juice
1/2 oz pineapple juice
1/2 oz lime juice
1/2 oz lemon juice

First mix your fruit juices together in a mixing glass. Pour the white wine into a chilled wine glass, and top with the soda. Then add the juice mixture, and serve.

Sangria Starter Recipe - by the pitcher

1 Bottle of Red Wine
1 lemon
1 orange
1 lime
2 tbsps of sugar
Orange Juice
2 shots of gin (for extra kick)
Sliced strawberries or other fruit
1 small can of pineapple
4 cups of ginger ale

Pour wine into the pitcher. Cut the lemon, orange and lime into wedges, pick out seeds that are visible. Gently squeeze the juice from each wedge into the pitcher, then add each wedge into the pitcher. Add the pineapple, the sugar, orange juice to taste, and the gin. Chill overnight for the best taste. Before serving, add ginger ale, sliced berries/fruit and pour over ice in chilled glasses. If you are serving immediately instead of chilling, you will need to use a lot of ice.
